I see where Gav is coming from. There are some degrees which I think should be reclassified to different qualifications.

Everyone now thinks it's their god-given right to a degree, they have definitely lost their premium.

i want to agree with this, but i don't even know which degrees i would suggest as being in need of reclassification ><

idc what you wanna define as academic but why should whether something is academic be what determines whether it is beneficial to society and worthy of government funding?

surely there must be cheaper ways of training people in the art of fast food instead of degrees... jk!!

TBH i think todays industries rely way too much on degrees and not enough on actual capability, i've worked with people who have x amount of qualifications but can't even operate a photocopier let alone do the job they're supposed to be doing, i've also worked with people who have no qualifications at all who produce some of the best work i've ever seen yet they don't even get an interview because they don't have a bit of paper that says they can do something that could easily be proved by a work trial or something similar....

If I am correct you can do a lot of university courses without ever actually learning or getting any experience in your job.

you do not need a degree to massge. an nvq prehaps. a degree. no.
however i think uni provides much more than the qualification i know ive learnt a lot of valuable life skills

it's far from the best career in the world though it's difficult to break into without workin for companies and clients that stifle your creativity, and it's very difficult to get rich off it. still, like all creative areas it's hella rewarding
